A Counsellor:

  • Listens effectively to what you are saying
  • Works with you to define your goals with respect to your values and culture
  • Facilitates your untangling of thoughts, feelings and worries about a situation
  • Helps you gain your own insight into how you act, think and feel
  • Teaches, shows and helps you express your emotions in your own way
  • Teaches, shows and helps you work out your own solutions to problems
  • Teaches, shows and helps you accept what cannot be changed
  • Teaches, shows, helps and supports you and your relationship while you do all this
  • Helps you become empowered to act in ways that are in your best interest
  • Uses a variety of different techniques to help you explore what is important to you Ref:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counselling

We promise to:

  • Provide time to share problems and concerns in a non-judgmental setting with a trained counsellor. 'It was a relief to get many problems off my chest. I could say what I liked and I wasn't judged.'
  • Offer confidentiality, which may lead to the release of long suppressed information that may be causing distress. Expressing thoughts and feelings is easier in an atmosphere of trust and confidence. 'When I used to see my counsellor I felt like I could tell her just about everything and when I did tell her my problems I used to feel a lot better, as before I used to keep everything bottled up.'
  • Help people access personal resources in times of crisis and when distressed by incidents. 'It has helped me get back to normal from a very difficult time in my life and I'm 100 per cent better than I was.'
  • Help people develop positive self-esteem and insight into relationships. 'The problems at home have gone away and I'm doing a lot better at work. Counselling made me think. I was anxious at home but I'm all right now.'
  • Help people mature in their sense of values and in using their intellectual and emotional resources. This can help them develop some resilience to adapting to changes in their lives. 'Counselling has helped me in the past and has given me the confidence I need to face other problems that have arisen, without them worrying me too much.'
